Fri, Sep. 9 2005

George Cummings  has started working on his new solo CD at West Productions with Harold Hutchcraft and yours truly. With all the problems George has had with his old band DR HOOK  AND THE  MEDICINE SHOW which he named and those remaining have denied, including non payments of royalties,no recognition and all the other B.S., I suggested since he has survived all that crapola to title the album " Off The Hook"  What do you think ?.................  YOUR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME

Blues News Review "It Is What It Is" by Pete Hoppula (July Issue)
Mon, Aug. 8 2005
<< THE FLARES It Is What It Is, Vol.1 (Astro Records CD 83105), '05 The Flares (formed in Meridian, Mississippi in 1956) were at the height of their greatness during the last part of the 1950's. This combo, led by talented singer-pianist Darryl Vincent and guitarist James Pasquale was known then as one of the hottest club bands of Deep South. Although The Flares' recording career (that started in Summer of 1958) didn't last even for two years, the group remained active all through the 1960's, doing a number of gigs but also some recordings for instance at Chess Studios in Chicago, and in New Orleans under production machinery of fabled Cosimo Matassa. Concerning the last-mentioned, it's essential to update my recent Darryl Vincent -story (BN 207-208) with addition that at least a couple of songs from those N.O. sessions were also released. I happened to find a promotional single "Unexpectedly" / "Little Girl", issued as by Daryl Vincent on - not Smash but on Krash Records (#5001) around 1960. In any case in February 1975, Darryl Vincent, who was promisingly making his second coming now as a blue-eyed soul singer and the Astro recording artist (with a new backing group The Sunshine Buggs), ended his temporal journey prematurely as a result of suicide. Concurrently, the tragic occurrence almost sealed the faith of The Flares as well. However, Jim Pasquale, who has continued his music career in Nashville, has wanted to maintain the legacy of his old friend and bandmate all the way to the 21st century by performing occasionally with the original Flares in special concerts and commemorations. Strictly speaking the band was reborn not until Spring of 2004, when Pasquale, the original members since 1959, the drummer Norman "Knobby" Lowell and the guitarist George Cummings, along with Nashville singer-songwriters Scotty Cothran, Harold Hutchcraft, Jack Bond, and Forest Borders gathered in Lebanon, Tennessee to cut this comeback album in hand. Besides the fulltime singer-songwriter Pasquale, also George Cummings deserves to be expressly mentioned. After the The Flares he had formed The Chocolate Papers with Ray Sawyer, Billy Francis and a few other musicians. The group was soon to become a world famous as a prototype of legendary Doctor Hook & Medicine Show. Cummings left Dr. Hook due to health-related reasons in 1975, and subsequently created a new career in Nashville as a solo artist, a guitarist and a song-writer. Scotty Cothran is the third Flares member who has attracted attention as a songwriter, and now he comes into his own also as a charismatic Tony Joe White-type singer. Partially self-produced "It Is What It Is" was released by Astro Records in February 2005. Its birth history however reaches as far as the musical careers of the featured artists themselves. Above all the album is an epitome of original rock'n'roll generation's enthusiasm and desire to breed still versatile roots music without knitting brows or bowing down to any particular music styles and trends. A true love for music making glows from the background of this record which is obviously made according to the musicians' own conditions, and without any forced demand for million copies record sales or proving how outstanding you are. Although the result yet sounds here and there a little bit half-finished, anyhow it offers a great alternative amongst all that over-produced and calculated music supply. The thing is that The Flares doesn't try to shoot for the stars. Their music sticks strictly to the basics - it is simply what it is! All the songs on this album are new and written by the artists themselves. The opening move "Sweet Mississippi" is sung by Pasquale, and it represents the most rolling moments of the package. Although you can't describe Pasquale an actual virtuoso as a vocalist, his interpretation of Fogerty-spirited "Goodbye's Too Good For You" plainly surprises with its controlled aggressiveness. Reduced swamp-rock piece "Hummin' In The Wind" as well as soul ballads "Can You Feel It" and "Tell Me" are in turn Scotty Cothran's demonstrations of his skills. George Cummings again is responsible for the "rootsiest" portion of the disc by striking up an almost-rockabilly song "Too Fast For Me". Despite the tasty points of departure, you've got to admit that The Flares also have a plenty of improvement. There is absolutely no way to open their long performing experience, musical vision and technical talents to question, but exactly that's why the momentary stumbling that troubles some tracks here is almost inexcusable. I dare to argue that it wouldn't be bad at all to place some extra bets for the mixing as well. Now the demoish, almost a living room-a-like sound reproduction banalizes the listening enjoyment of several otherwise fine tunes. In this case, I suppose the more balanced entity would have been able to reach also with a slight reduction of instrument- and solo-arsenal. Those who are interested in purchasing this pleasant but apparently quite limitedly pressed cd, can pick up the ordering instructions from J. Pasquale Music's website (http://www.jpasqualemusic.com), which contains also lots of other information regarding current doings of singer-songwriter elite of both Nashville and Alabama scene. And why "Vol.1"? Well, because also "It Is What It Is, Vol.2" is in progress - and while writing this, I _________________________________________________________________ 3 vrk:n s?nnuste http://www.msn.fi/uutiset/saa
